If you are looking for autism services in westbury that accepts medicaid, please look no further than our facility. While the underlying causes of autism are still being studied, it’s believed that genetics and environment both play a role. There is no single cure for autism, but various therapies and interventions can help people with autism live fuller lives.

Also known as ASD or autism spectrum disorder, roughly around 1 in 44 children in the US currently have it. Because there is no one specific type of autism, the treatments, and resources to handle it will vary and depend entirely on how severe the case is. Individuals with ASD often have difficulties with spoken language, nonverbal communication, and social interaction. They may also exhibit repetitive behaviors and narrow interests. Some people with ASD are knowledgeable and able to function in society, while others require a great deal of support.

Different Types Of Autism

Despite autism being a very diversified disorder, it can still be broken down into five main categories. These five categories are:

  • Asperger Syndrome – AS can be characterized as one of the more mild or high-functioning forms of autism. People with AS or autism can function normally in society for the most part. They can be self-sufficient and hold down a profession without their autism having any serious interference with those things. The minor challenges a person with autism may experience are a flat monotone speech with little emotion or inflection, difficulty relating to or socializing with others, inability to express and/or articulate certain emotions despite feeling them, and experiencing challenges when changing into a new routine.
  • Rett Syndrome – a much more severe form of autism that can be diagnosed in infancy. While more present in females than males, people with RS can still enjoy fulfilling lives with the proper care. However, their experiences with RS can include but are not limited to trouble with basic movement and coordination, challenges with communication and speech, and in rare instances, trouble with breathing. This form of autism manifests itself into a more physical form than the others.
  • Kanner’s Syndrome – originally discovered in 1943 and classified as “infantile autism,” is one of the more basic and straightforward forms of autism. The specific characterizations of someone with KS are a lack of emotional attachment with others, lack of filter or control when speaking, OCD with objects, a very specific high memory with random events or dates.

  • Childhood Disintegrative Disorder – also known as Heller’s syndrome- is a neurodevelopmental disorder that causes the child to develop speech, motor, and language skills slower than most children. The strange thing about this disorder is that the children affected can start with normal development of speech, language, and motor skills until around the age of 3, and they will start to decline until around the age of 10. As opposed to Rett syndrome, CDD affects more males than females. Children with CDD can have difficulties with toilet training, language and vocabulary development, social and situational awareness, and various motor skills.
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder – like autism 1, a more mild form of the disorder mostly affects people who experience it in social settings. Children with this degree of autism can struggle with language and speech development, walking, and other motor skills.

If your child or a loved one is struggling with any of the above forms of autism and are looking for autism services in Westbury that accepts medicaid, please come down to Charles Evans Center.
