Opioid Abuse Treatment

Addiction may be hard for you or someone you know to deal with. It can affect various aspects of your life such as work, friends, love, and more. If you or someone you know may be suffering from opioid abuse and are seeking treatment, consider contacting us today at CEC Health Center. We offer Opioid Abuse Treatment on Long Island that Accepts Medicaid. Our mission to serve underrepresented patients is our utmost priority regardless of their inability to pay. We will offer an individualized treatment plan that can get you back on the path to recovery.

What are Opioids?

Opioids are a group of drugs that are used to treat and relieve pain. These drugs when entered in the body bind to receptors in your brain, spinal cord, and other areas to release dopamine, the body’s natural pain-killer.

A list of opioid drugs that are commonly prescribed are:

  • Codeine
  • Fentanyl
  • Hydromorphone
  • Methadone
  • Morphine
  • Oxycodone
  • Oxymorphone

Heroin is derived from morphine and is considered the most highly addictive opioid drug. Whether obtained illegally or prescribed, opioids are highly addictive and it’s important to understand what are the side effects and how to tell if someone may be overdosing.

What are the Side Effects?

When taken, opioids release the body’s natural pain-killing hormone known as dopamine. These give a feeling of pain relief which is temporary. As a result, people will continue to take doses of it to achieve the same “high” feeling. However, over time your body begins to build a tolerance and it will require more doses to achieve the same effect which can lead to dependency or addiction.

Side effects include not limited to:

  • Pain relief
  • Confusion
  • Constipation
  • A slower rate of breathing
  • Dizziness
  • Depression
  • Drowsiness
  • Headaches
  • Itchiness
  • Nausea

What If I am Addicted?

It is important to understand the difference between dependency and addiction. Dependency is where your body becomes dependent on the drug. You begin to need more and more of the doses to achieve the same effect and experience withdrawal if you stop taking the drug. Addiction occurs when you cannot stop using the drug regardless of any consequences.

The signs of addiction vary from person to person depending on the type of substance they take. However, the general warning signs include:

  • Daily use of the drug.
  • Experiencing a sense of urgency to use the drug that it prohibits you from concentrating on anything else.
  • You begin to take larger doses of the drug or prolong use than intended.
  • You take larger doses to achieve the same effect.
  • You always have a supply of the drug.
  • You begin to spend your money on the drug which was meant for necessities.
  • Develop risky behaviors to get the drug such as stealing or becoming violent.
  • Engaging in risky behaviors while under the influence such as unprotected sex and driving.
  • Experiencing withdrawals when you stop using the drug.

If you notice a shift in personality, behavioral, physical, performance or health, you or someone you know may be experiencing an addiction. Contact us today and start an opioid abuse treatment in Nassau county that accepts Medicaid to get you back the path of recovery.

What Are My Options?

The first step if you think someone may be experiencing addiction is to learn about the misconceptions of the drug and how it can affect the brain. Asking is the next step when you or a loved one is ready to seek treatment. We advise bringing a family member or friend who can help you begin the road to treatment.

Once acceptance has been filled, detoxification begins. This is the process of ending opioid usage as quickly as possible and can take anywhere from several days to weeks.  Our doctor will complete an examination and develop a treatment plan that is right for you. Once the drug is out of your system, treatment can begin.

Treatment options include:

  • Medicines
  • Counseling Therapy
  • Support groups
  • Residential and hospital-based treatment centers

Relapse is also part of the recovery process. it is important to avoid outside triggers and reduce your risk of relapsing in the future.

Opioid Abuse Treatment Methods

Opioid Abuse Treatment on Long Island that Accepts Medicaid

Opioid abuse is the psychological and physical reliance on opioids. Opioids include the drug heroin, synthetic opioid fentanyl, and legal prescription pain relievers such as codeine, morphine, oxycodone, and more. They are prescribed to treat pain, but prolonged use can cause the body to develop a dependence. When drug dependence begins to interfere with your life, addiction occurs. Opioid abuse and addiction can cause a lot of problems in your life, but there is opioid abuse treatment in Suffolk County that accepts Medicaid that can help at CEC Health Center.

Signs of Opioid Abuse

Opioid addiction is a chronic disease that has the potential to cause major problems in an individual’s life. Opioid addiction is the compulsive urge to use opioid drugs. Opioids can be highly addictive in many cases, even if the medication is prescribed correctly and taken as directed. Prescription opioids are often misused or given to others. If you or someone you know is abusing opioids, look for Opioid Abuse Treatment on Long Island that Accepts Medicaid. Opioids have the ability to change the brain’s chemistry and cause drug tolerance, which means that in order to achieve the same effect, the dose needs to be increased. Taking opioids over an extended period of time causes drug dependence, which can cause symptoms of withdrawal. Common signs of opioid addiction include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Weight loss
  • Intense cravings
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Uncontrollable opioid use
  • Poor sleep habits
  • Financial difficulties

Opioid withdrawal symptoms can include:

  • Cravings
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Vomiting
  • Shaking
  • Feeling cold

Opioid withdrawal can be extremely difficult, and even dangerous. If you are trying to quit, medically supervised treatment is advised. Trying to quit cold turkey can lead to continued abuse. Abusing opioids can severely impact a person’s daily life and their relationships. If you or someone you know is struggling with opioid abuse or addiction, it is not too late to seek treatment. You can find Opioid Abuse Treatment on Long Island that Accepts Medicaid.

Opioid Abuse Treatment Methods

Treatment for opioid abuse can include medication, counseling and behavioral therapies, residential and hospital based treatment, and medication assisted therapy. The three medicines that are mainly used to treat opioid addiction are:

  • Methadone
  • Buprenorphine
  • Naltrexone

Buprenorphine and methadone are used to decrease cravings and withdrawal symptoms. They target the same areas in the brain as other opioids, but without the high. Naltrexone does not help withdrawal symptoms, but it takes away the high you would get while taking opioids. It is used to treat an overdose. In order to take naltrexone, you need to have gone through a full detox in order to prevent bad withdrawal symptoms. Another effective treatment for opioid abuse and addiction is counseling. Counseling can help you change your behavior related to drug use and build healthy habits. Some forms of counseling for opioid abuse include:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy – This can teach you how to recognize and stop negative behavior patterns, and teach you coping skills.
  • Motivational enhancement therapy – This approach helps you resolve your feelings about treatment and stop your drug use. This plan can help you stay motivated internally to help you stick with treatment.
  • Contingency management – This focuses on rewarding positive behaviors
  • Group counseling – This can help you feel supported and like you’re not alone with your troubles. Group counseling allows you to hear about the challenges and successes of others who are in a similar situation to you, and teach you new strategies to cope with your own issues.
  • Family counseling – This can help you improve relationships with the people that are closest to you.

You can also use resources like peer support groups to help you treat your addiction. Residential treatment programs involve you living with others that are facing the same issue, and allow you support each other. Hospital-based programs involve health care and treatment for people with medical issues. These types of treatment are structured and involve several forms of counseling and therapies, and often include medication. Opioid abuse has the potential to consume your life, but Opioid Abuse Treatment on Long Island that Accepts Medicaid can help you regain control.

Opioids and how they’re dangerous

Though they’re used in the realm of prescription medicine to effectively manage pain for patients recently in trauma incidents, opioids can have the ability to be dangerous when misused. Taking the opioid in a way that is not prescribed, taking it when not prescribed, and taking medicine purely for the high gives a clear sign of an issue that needs to be tackled. This type of issue takes diligence and dedication to solve, as slipping back into the void of addiction is common and more dangerous than getting into opioids in the first place. Common side effects of opioids are a relaxing sensation that gives the life around you a euphoric numbness. Unfortunately, this state is addicting, coupled with the unconscious effects the drugs have on your brain chemistry, makes the situation an addiction.

This type of addiction is unsustainable for multiple reasons. This manner’s common drugs are recognized as codeine, fentanyl, morphine, oxymorphone, Vicodin, and oxycontin. In high doses, any of these drugs can warp the brain and can have serious side effects that are unsustainable. Our Opioid Abuse Treatment on Long Island that Accepts Medicaid pushes the fact that there are more dangerous symptoms of opioids, such as slowed breathing and nausea, which can induce states that can cause suffocation and drug-induced hysteria. These symptoms are likely side-effects of any of these drugs; not only that but any of these drugs mentioned above, coupled together, is how most drug overdoses occur.

The Road of Dangers and Recovery

Recovery from the drug overdoses from these medications is alarming. Most people have been exposed to the effects of drugs either through courses or the unfortunate incident and know of the withdrawals coupled with the drug. Withdrawals with these harder drugs are going to be rougher than any withdrawal symptom from something like alcohol. Hysteria is common with most of these recoveries and is one of the leading reasons these unfortunate people who chose to relapse eventually take the pill or light up. The numbing sensation felt from the drugs are typically chosen as opposed to the fearful road of recovery. That being said, why recover? The strongest wills are the ones we can see sacrifice their vice from start to recovery right in front of our eyes. The drug abuse showcased throughout daily life can rip people and relationships apart, but it can also bring those same people together through recovery.

Opioid Abuse Treatment on Long Island that Accepts Medicaid

Besides the obvious choice of choosing to live and leaving the past drug abuse in the past, people who chose to recover can help people who are more likely to be exposed to drugs or have been exposed to drugs recover or turn away from these harder drugs. Though federal regulation may diminish some of these drugs’ overdosing capabilities, they’re a very real problem. If a recovered addict can stop someone from making the same mistakes, their recovery has significant value on something besides themselves, giving worth to their sacrifice. The specialists at the CEC Health Center, the center for Opioid Abuse Treatment on Long Island that Accepts Medicaid, is more equipped to handle the effects of the recovering addicts to ensure that others are less likely to make the same unfortunate mistakes. For more information on how you or a loved one could start the road to recovery, visit our website today.
